49ers general manager John Lynch didn’t have much to say about the timeline for tight end talks with George Kittle about a contract extension, but was more forthcoming when it came to another deal.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan and Lynch joined the team in 2017, and Shanahan earned an extension this offseason that ties him to the franchise during the 2025 season. It appears Lynch and the team are nearing an extension that would keep him on line with Shanahan.
Lynch said on KNBR that “he understood that Kyle was going to be the first” because he reached “a kind of top of the market” because he needed a more lucrative deal than he had on FOX while Shanahan was a head coach for the first time. Now that Shanahan’s contract is out of the way, Lynch said he hopes something will happen in talks with 49ers owner Jed York.
“I don’t know if I’m going to be a lifesaver on this, but I love what we’re doing,” said Lynch, via NBCSportsBayArea.com. “I love coming to work every day, and I think there is good news on the horizon. Jed and the York family have been tremendous for me. Hopefully we will have good news here soon. ”
Last year’s trip to the Super Bowl was a big step forward from what the 49ers were able to accomplish in the first two seasons and Lynch and Shanahan’s contract extensions make it clear that the team hopes that such success will be the norm in the next years.
