John Krasinski had a very different hairstyle in “The Office”. We can all imagine Jim Halpert’s hair.
Some words that come to mind are sloppy, moppy and bieberish. Bieberish is not a word, but you get the reference.
A word that doesn’t come to mind is “bogus,” but in a recent interview with Mashable, the “The Office” stylist admitted that for at least one season, Krasinski wore a wig to achieve Halpert’s iconic look.
Kim Ferry explained that the reason for the wig was because Krasinski wanted to take a role in the movie that involved shaving short hair.
Ferry helped Krasinski convince showrunner Greg Daniels to allow the actor to cut his hair to star opposite George Clooney in the 2008 movie “Leatherheads.”
Being in the movie meant that Krasinski would have to cut his hair before filming the last six episodes of season 3 of “The Office.”
Daniels closed the request “immediately,” according to Ferry.
Ferry told Mashable:
“She paid for the wig, a human hair wig made by a friend of mine, Natascha Ladek, who is the best wig maker in town,” said Ferry, adding that the couple’s plan was daunting and made her feel that his job was being put on the line. “She came in to do a little secret adaptation, made the wig, we got it and it looked amazing. [Krasinski] I arrived a little later that day, and he had the wig hidden in a little secret place ready for him. When it was just him and me, I put it on, and then he went out and filmed. “
Ferry said he followed Krasinski, who was still wearing the wig, to Daniels’ office and nervously waited outside. While waiting for Daniels’s reaction, Ferry said that writer and actor BJ Novak (Ryan Howard) approached her and asked if she was waiting to find out if she could cut Krasinski’s hair. Ferry recalls Novak saying to him, “Well, I have to tell you … I just saw John and I feel like we’re going to know if he’s a wig or not.”
Krasinski went to Daniels’ office once more, wearing the wig, and begged him to allow him to cut his hair. Daniels said he would absolutely know if Krasinski had a piece, to which the actor replied “no you wouldn’t” and tore off the wig to reveal it was fake.
Daniels allowed the haircut and the wig.
Thanks to IMDB, it’s easy to find out which episodes involve the Halpert hairpiece. The last six episodes of season 3 include The negotiation, Safety training, Product recall, Women’s appreciation, Beach gamesand The job.
In “Product Recall”, the episode begins with Jim posing as Dwight. Krasinski wears a wig on the scene.
Krasinski also wears a wig during Roy’s attack at the beginning of “The Negotiation”.
Well, we were all deceived.
Ferry is also credited with transforming Michael Scott from his smooth, almost bald dome, and even figured out a way to make it look like Meredith (Kate Flannery) shaved off her head infected with lice during Season 9 without actually shaving her head. (which Daniels insisted on doing).
