On Wednesday, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson wants catcher Antonio Brown on the team. On Thursday, Ravens coach John Harbaugh did not close the door by signing Brown.
“Hey, respect [Lamar] for feeling like this. I respect your opinion on this, “Harbaugh told reporters, through Jonas Shaffer of the Baltimore Sun. “We will see any player at any time.”
Harbaugh then added this observation regarding Brown: “I don’t think he’s available to sign.”
Technically brown it is available to be signed. However, it is believed that he would be quickly placed on the commissioner’s list of exemptions, if someone signed it. This means that Brown would be paid for not playing while the league continues to crawl on whether and to what extent Brown will be suspended for multiple potential violations of the Personal Conduct Policy.
The Ravens are in an awkward place with Antonio Brown. His cousin, Marquise, is a key member of the receiving body. If the Ravens sign Antonio Brown, and if things don’t go well, Antonio could (intentionally or not) poison Marquise against the team. And so the team could be in a weird retention pattern with Antonio Brown, trying not to say “no” while waiting for someone else to give the Ravens an escape hatch by signing it.
