The viral video of the two girls who were unfamiliar with a ton of hit songs from the past 20 years made many feel very old this week. If that didn’t work, how about this? John Elway is 60 years old.
For those of us who grew up in the ’70s and’ 80s, Elway is still the baseball player who made a power play and challenged the NFL draft. He is the young gunslinger who became one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, culminating a career without any championship by winning a pair of Super Bowls and walking into the sunset.
And then, after more than a decade outside of the NFL, Elway became a top executive with the Broncos, creating another Super Bowl winner as General Manager. Although the search for a post-Peyton option as a quarterback has not gone well (MDS raised the question of how different the NFL would be if Elway had selected Russell Wilson instead of Brock Osweiler), the selection of Drew Lock in 2019 could change. Three playing seasons below .500.
Like Ozzie Newsome, Elway’s performance as general manager could justify a Hall of Fame failure if he was not yet a player. (Newsome would definitely have a second one.) And with many years to pursue more championships, Elway still has plenty of opportunities to add to a special legacy in Denver.
It would be easier if Elway didn’t have to directly compete with a quarterback who could eventually be better than Elway. A quarterback who will make many people really old when he turns 60 in 2055.
