John Carpenter has confirmed his attachment to the proposed reboot of horror classic The thing, as well as a new ‘Lost Themes’ arriving early next year.
The Master of Horror spoke as part of Fantasia Film Festival, where he had accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award this year.
When asked about upcoming work he was discussing with Jason Blum, the founder and CEO of the popular horror institute Blumhouse Productions, Carpenter mentioned one of her most anticipated projects – an update on the director’s classic from 1982.
‘I think he will work on rebooting The thing, “He told the interviewer, adding that he would be involved, but work on the project was still” underway. “The director would not be approached whether it would take the form of a prequel, sequel or remake.
The film was previously released as recently as 2011. Watch the full interview below, with discussion on the reboot starting around the 27-minute mark.
Carpenter also confirmed his latest album, ‘Lost Themes III: Alive After Death’, due out February 2021.
The director touched on details of a new track ‘Buried’, presumably set to feature in a future horror film instead of a ‘Lost Themes’ album, although no further details have been released yet.
Last month (July 3), Carpenter shared two brand new songs without a soundtrack, titled ‘Skeleton’ and ‘Unclean Spirit’.
Both tracks were made in collaboration with Carpenter’s son Cody and godson Daniel Davis, who both work with the legendary composer on his Halloween soundtracks. Although both songs are available to listen to digitally, a 28-inch limited edition 12-inch with art by Chris Bilheimer will be released on August 28th.
Carpenter also recently spoke of the slasher references Halloween Kills, the latest film in the legendary franchise, calls it “intense and brutal”.
