– It seems that Burrow had one bad fill, if you can call it that. He got out of the bag and then rolled around in his 30s into a wide open space to the left. While running with the ball and having a defender running, he was allowed for Erickson in the end zone to go right. It was a bit and cornerback William Jackson broke it up,
Since he had not yet looked at the tape, Taylor was hesitant to talk about specific players. But not Jackson.
“(He) just made some good plays on the ball. I was excited to see that from him,” Taylor said. “He took some steps in the right direction. It was what I noticed when I mentioned plays on crime and watching the defense. I thought he was worth shooting out today.”
- It was a great day for the Florida State House of Representatives. Next to Burrow, the most exciting rookie was undrafted Florida State runs back Jacques Patrick, Tate’s buddy from Tallahassee. The 6-2, 231-pound Patrick showed a nice mix of speed and power and basically scored a touchdown only for himself for Finley’s second group when three long runs broke off.
At one scene he jumps away from everyone on a whip to the left and at another he breaks two tackles to get into the secondary. The touchdown came on what looked like a 20-yard run on really good blocking by that second offensive line anchored by guard Billy Price and tackled Fred Johnson on the left.
He stopped it at other periods after one run he broke outside the left, and the 6-8 Johnson was the first to reach him, picking him up with one hand and writing to him, “Keep running, keep running.”
– Keep an eye tight end Drew Sample, last year’s second-rounder who is finally healthy. He has a great camp and watches these two plays from Burrow’s last ride. After grabbing a Burrow pass through the seam and stepping up a few key yards after catching on to about 20 yards of play, Sample came over the line and pulled linebacker Austin Calitro onto a beautiful block that jumped Perine for a big win .
Perine kind of had a series like Patrick did. He then scored almost untouched on a red zone sweep with Jordan and let tackle Jonah Williams lead from massive interference.
“I thought offensively the run game, it was a good starting point for our first scrimmage,” Taylor said. “Of course, that’s a point of emphasis. We’ve got a lot of work done in the passing game. Just the way we’ve been working the last few weeks. So, when you finally put the pads on, you want to see guys run the ball. “That was a big clamp for both sides. I’m excited to review this tape and really analyze a lot of different positions.”
– Left tackle Jonah Williams looked good stopping. He does not get free lunches with a rigid diet from Carl Lawson, a man who never stops. But Burrow seems to have time left on Friday and he did a nice job in the run game on the Perine drive.
“He’s been calling. He’s certainly been a great asset to us so far in this training camp,” Taylor said. “Those are the expectations we had for him. He gets a lot of good work in against some really good rushers and guys who are good run defenders. It’s a good test for him every day. He has responded to the challenges and I am really encouraged by him. “
