Joe Biden grabs Kamala Harris as his running mate

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

Joe Biden has selected his running mate, and on Tuesday revealed to top advisers the woman he will invite to join his Democratic presidential card, two people familiar with the matter told CNN.

He is busy making the announcement this Tuesday.

The Biden campaign has informed some of the women where the former vice president’s team has been debating his choice of running mate, three sources familiar with the matter told CNN.

Reporter Karen Bass, California, president of the Congressional Black Caucus, was told by Biden herself that she was not the choice, a source told CNN. Georgia’s Democrat Stacey Abrams was also informed on Tuesday that she was not a member of Biden’s suffrage, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.

As part of the selection process, the former vice president spoke directly to the final candidates, according to people familiar with the process, through both face-to-face meetings and remote conversations. Officials would not say which of the candidates Biden personally visited, but CNN confirmed last week that Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer flew to Delaware for a meeting. Sen. Kamala Harris in California and former Obama National Security Adviser Susan Rice are seen among others as the most serious assailants.

CNN had previously reported that Biden was also thought to be considering Bass, sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, say people familiar with the search.

In another sign that the pick is difficult, an official of the Biden campaign told CNN on Tuesday that they have assembled staff for Biden’s future running mate.

Karine Jean-Pierre, who joined the Biden campaign as a senior adviser in May, will lead the running mate’s team as chief of staff. Jean-Pierre had previously worked for the presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and Martin O’Malley.

Two veterans of the Obama-Biden administration are also joining the team. Liz Allen, who served as Deputy Communications Director for Biden as Vice President and as Deputy Communications Director at the White House, serves as Director of Communications at the running mate. And Sheila Nix, who was a staff member for Biden’s reelection campaign in 2012 and served as Jill Biden’s White House Chief of Staff, will be a senior adviser to the running mate. The vice presidency is expected to add some of its own advisers to the team as well.

Whoever rules Biden will be his own history choice, and will only become the third woman nominated as a vice presidential candidate for a ticket from a major party.
