Jim Weatherly, ‘Midnight Train to Georgia’ songwriter, dies at 77

And his love of the game led to his greatest musical success, first involving the young Farah Fawcett and eventually the legendary recording of his tune “Midnight Train to Georgia” by Gladys Knight and Peeps.

Weatherman, who also wrote songs for Ray Price, Glenn Campbell, Kenny Rogers and others, died Wednesday at his home in Brentwood, Tennessee, near Nashville, family friend Charlie Monke told the Tennessee newspaper.

He was 77, and his family told the monk that the weather had died of natural causes.

Born in Mississippi, the weather undefeated the University of Mississippi football team in the 1962 season, an SEC championship and a national championship. The second year, it was an early quarterback when the rebels repeated as SEC champs.

After college, he decided to make music instead of football. And a few years later in Los Angeles, Weatherly played flag football with a group of friends, including TV actor Lee Majors of “The Six Million Dollar Man,” he recalled during an interview with the Nashville Songwriters Association International.

The weather one day called the house of majors, and the actor’s girlfriend, who would become “Charlie’s Angel” star Farrah Fawcett-majors, replied. She said she was to “fly to Houston at midnight” and visit her family.

“A little camel flew,” the weather told NSAI. “I feel like the title of the song.”

He wrote “Midnight Plane to Houston” as a country song, never imagining it would become an R&B hit. By the time he reached Gladys Knight and Peeps, the title and style had changed, and he became the No. 1 Grammy-winning classic.

“I am amazed that it has gone as far as it did,” Weather told NSAI. “It’s a timeless record.”

Knight and Pipes Weather’s tunes “None of Us” and “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me.” Also hit with.

On Friday Knight tweeted, “I’m missing Jim Weatherly Already. It was about life and love … We were just made for each other. We extended life together. I will miss him so much and will always love him.”

As an actor, Weatherly did a pop and adult-contemporary hit film “The To Be” and hit the country with “I’ll Still Love You”, according to Songwriters Hall of Fame. They were included in 2014. “Midnight Train” is one of Rolling Stone’s 500 best time songs.
