Jets love what they see in Mekhi Becton

Jets first round pick Mekhi Becton is already impressing his coaches.

Jets coach Adam Gase was asked Sunday whether Becton looks confused at all when he begins his NFL career. The learning curve for rookies can be a steep one.

‘No, not even close. “It’s funny, he seems to be doing it for a minute, ‘said Gase. ‘It looks very natural to him. I’m like you guys, every moment a rookie joins the starting offensive line, we all know it’s a lot, and especially against the defense, our defense every day that you get a lot of different looks. He looks nice to me. And he makes no mistakes. I am very impressed with how he works to his knowledge of football, how he retains things, gets the information, recalls, and then executes at the same time, plays fast. He does a really good job. ”

The Jets hope Becton can be their starting left-handed approach for the next decade, after giving him no. 11 drawn from Louisville in total. At 6-foot-7 and 370 pounds, Becton is an impressive figure on the field. He also shows that he is a fast learner.

WR Breshad Perriman had high praise for QB Sam Darnold after their first few practices together.

“I feel like Sam is great,” Perriman said. “His throwing ability is crazy. I love the way he throws the ball. The touch he has on the ball is unreal. It is so receiver friendly. Just his personality and the way he has control over the room and the misunderstanding and the team is just crazy. If he is reserved and calm and still has that authority when it’s time to get out and let the bullets fly, he can very easily take control of the room. Him as a quarterback, man, it’s the dream of a receiver. ”

The Jets signed Perriman this free season.

The Jets will practice in pads for the first time Monday. They will be wearing shoulder pads and helmets before deploying the full pads this week. … Pickup from second round WR Denzel Mims (hamstring) missed his second straight practice. Gase said there is no timeline for Mims’ return. WR Vyncint Smith missed Sunday’s practice with a core muscle injury requiring a trip to a specialist. Rookie OT Cameron Clark suffered a shoulder injury in practice on Friday and is “week-to-week” Gase said. Others who missed Sunday’s practice were: CB Pierre Desir (hamstring), rookie DL Jabari Zuniga (quad), CB Brian Poole (dehydration) and DL Bronson Kaufusi (hamstring).
