Jets, giants await answers on coronavirus tests for newbies

The Jets rookies were due to show up for training camp Tuesday and receive their first COVID-19 tests, but the team delayed the date of the report.

The Jets are seeking more clarity on the testing policy agreed by the NFL and its players on Monday before starting to administer testing. The rookies are in New Jersey and are looking forward to starting their NFL careers.

Players must test negative twice before they are allowed to enter the team’s training center. Testing could start as early as Wednesday, if the Jets feel they have a full understanding of the testing protocols agreed Monday afternoon.

Quarterbacks and injured players are scheduled to report Thursday and the entire team will report next Tuesday. The NFL and players are still negotiating how the training camp will be structured, but there will likely be an acclimatization period of a few weeks before the players are on the field and on the pads.

The situation is similar, although a little more complicated, for the Giants. Rookies, quarterbacks and injured veterans are slated to report Thursday, but even that plan is on hold until there is more clarity on COVID-19’s agreed-upon testing procedures. Rookies have been told to stay home and not travel to New Jersey, league sources told The Post.

The Giants have only signed one of their 10 draft picks, although agreements exist with certain last-round picks pending a physical, according to sources. Those physicals, which will run over the weekend, cannot happen until the camp opens.

There is no deal yet with first-round pick Andrew Thomas, though the expectation is that he will join quickly and soon in line with the rookie salary scale, with the start of camp heightening the sense of urgency. The Giants’ two previous first-round picks, Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones, both signed on the eve of camp.

The Jets have eight of their nine draft picks signed with only third-round pick Ashtyn Davis yet to sign their deal.
