Eight years ago, Simpson decided it was time to confront her abuser.
“I went to her and said, ‘I know you know what was happening and I know you were being abused’ because she was being abused by an older man,” Simpson recently told Katherine Schwarzenegger on her podcast, “The Gift of Forgiveness.” . “He was always there in the house too, so he never touched me, but he would abuse her and she would come to me and do things to me and so, in many ways I felt bad for her and was allowing the abuse to occur.”
She added: “I said to her in the moment, ‘I know you have a lot to deal with,’ and I said that I should probably talk to someone and find a way to understand those moments and forgive those moments and heal from those moments.”
The “With You” singer said she decided to speak to her abuser because she was self-examining after her divorce from first husband Nick Lachey.
“I was celibate at the time and I was on this trip to explore myself and I knew I couldn’t go on without letting him know that I wasn’t going to leave him without saying it,” she said, adding: “I left it unsaid for too long.
“I knew that if I was honest with her, it would clear my conscience. I even sent him the book and said I hope it brings healing. “
Simpson decided to forgive the woman to assist her in her own healing process while recalling their conversation.
