Japan backs India in Ladakh, 'opposes' change in China's status quo

Chinese and Indian troops became involved in a series of clashes throughout LAC.

New Delhi:

Japan on Friday expressed hope for a peaceful resolution of the ongoing confrontation between Indian and Chinese troops and asserted that it opposed any attempt to change the status quo in the Current Line of Control (LAC).

New Delhi briefed Tokyo on the situation in LAC after a major clash between Indian and Chinese troops last month in the Galwan Valley area. After the confrontation, India had said that Chinese troops unilaterally attempted to change the status quo during the de-escalation.

“I had a good conversation with Foreign Secretary (Harsh Vardhan) Shringla. I appreciated his report on the situation throughout LAC, including the GOI’s policy to seek a peaceful solution. Japan also expects a peaceful resolution through dialogue. Japan opposes any unilateral attempt to change the status quo, “Japenese envoy Satoshi Suzuki tweeted on Friday.

Tensions have increased across LAC since May. Chinese and Indian troops became involved in a series of clashes throughout LAC.

Border tensions between India and China escalated after 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives in a violent clash in the Galwan Valley on June 15 and 16 after an attempt by Chinese troops to unilaterally change the status quo during de-escalation. Indian interceptions revealed that the Chinese side suffered 43 casualties, including deaths and serious injuries in the confrontation.

India and China have been engaged in talks to ease continuing border tensions since last month.
