James Williams’ landing could signal the start of a career in Miami

Something special is brewing in Coral Gables.

Miami hurricanes continue to outpace the SEC on the recruiting path for South Florida’s top prospects.

In June Miami beat Georgia by four-star wide receiver Romello Brinson.

In July, the hurricanes came face to face and won a recruitment battle against Auburn for the safety of four-star Kamren Kinchens.

Winning those recruiting battles was impressive, but Tuesday’s promise of five stars James Williams It is on another level.

Whether you want to hear it or not, the SEC is the gold standard in college football when it comes to recruiting at a high level.

If a program wants to win at a high level and compete for championships, just look at the final recruitment ranking of the sports team 247 for the 2020 cycle.

The SEC featured seven teams in the top ten: No. 1 UGA, No. 2 Alabama, No. 4 LSU, No. 6 Texas A&M, No. 7 Auburn, No. 9 Florida, and No. 10 Tennessee.

Those SEC teams are not guaranteed to compete for championships, but by stacking the best recruiting classes year after year, they have improved their likelihood of being a team that has the talent to compete at the highest level.

For Miami to make the leap to being nationally relevant again, the Hurricanes must begin to win some recruiting battles against the SEC heavyweights.

This UM coaching staff is starting to win those kinds of battles more regularly.

For the past decade, Miami has struggled to keep South Florida’s five-star talent at home. Landing Williams could indicate a change is happening with the UM soccer program on the recruiting route.

And if Miami can continue to win these kinds of battles on the draft road, then victory will continue on the field.

Williams is a genuine recruit in a big way. It is ranked as the No. 9 overall prospect in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Hurricanes have not signed a Top 10 player in the country during the 247Sports era (dating back to the 2011 cycle). The last Miami signer to rank in the country’s Top 10 was offensive Seantrel Henderson in the 2010 class.

Williams ranks as Miami’s 13th best engagement of all time.

Since 2011, Miami has signed five five stars, according to 247Sports Composite: RB Lorenzo Lingard, DE Chad Thomas, RB Duke Johnson, CB Tracy Howard and DE Anthony Chickillo.

Landing Williams also continues UM’s trend of being ‘Re-commit U’ this cycle. Williams joins Jacolby George, Romello Brinson, and Thad Franklin as local prospects who broke free of the hurricanes to re-engage with them later in the process.

Whatever Manny Diaz is doing on the recruiting path to convince these great prospects to get back on board is working.

While there is no doubt that Miami’s recruiting class in 2021 is already impressive, there is still a lot of work to be done in terms of accumulating local talent.

– Miami is in the ‘Top Two’ with Florida for the five-star DT Leonard Taylor

– Miami is in the ‘Top Three’ with LSU and Florida for the four-star DB Corey Collier.

– Miami is in the ‘Top Five’ of the five-star CB Jason Marshall.

– Miami is fighting Florida, Auburn and Tennessee for a three-star ATH Brasshard smith.

Continuing to win these battles against the SEC will be a great key to the success of the Manny diaz was.

At the midpoint of this 2021 recruiting cycle, so far so good.
