Jaguars DL Aaron Lynch suddenly retires

Jaguars defensive lineman Aaron Lynch is set to retire, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Later, the team announced that Lynch will be placed on the Jaguars reserve / retirement list tomorrow morning. There was currently no statement from Lynch.

Earlier today, Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone stated this in connection with Lynch’s lack of practice:

‘You know, the other man, [DE/OLB] “Aaron Lynch, that’s what I looked like, he’s taking care of something personal,” Marrone said Monday. ‘So he has to do that and we’ll see where that is when we go forward, so we’ve been in communication with him, so it’s not a problem. But I just want to tell you, so this way I’ll tell you in advance where we’re with the team, who’s there, who’s not?

Lynch was originally signed by the Jaguars on May 5 and has played in the league for the Chicago Bears and the San Francisco 49ers. Lynch would expect to play a rotating role as a pass rusher with the Jaguars.

This news comes just a day after another purchase of free agent, DL Rodney Gunter, was forced to retire due to an enlarged aorta. Gunter has since expanded an opportunity by the Jaguars organization to rejoin the team in some capacity, just not on the football field.

The Jaguars have now lost five defensive lines that have chosen not to play this year, or have been injured, including Lynch, Gunter, Lerentee McCray, Al Woods and Dontavius Russell (reserve / injured). Both Woods and McCray opted out this season due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.
