A 24-year-old man was stabbed to death after a house fight that left neighbors in fear.

Michael McDonagh was repeatedly stabbed during the frenzied attack.

The victim, a member of a family of established travelers from Knock, was occasionally staying at the home on the Carrabeg Estate in Swinford, Co Mayo.

Gardaí rushed to the property around 10:50 p.m. Monday night after receiving reports of screaming and disturbances at the one-bedroom house.

McDonagh died within minutes after the bloody attack despite the best efforts of medical personnel to save him.

Gardai arrested a Pole in his 30s at the scene, and detectives at Castlebar Garda station questioned him Tuesday night after his detention period was extended.

The victim is understood to have been stabbed in a separate attack in the Ballyhaunis area last August.

Neighbor Ann Rowley, a married mother of four who has lived on the farm for 40 years, said: “It’s terrible to hear that something like this has happened so close to you.

“My son went to bed at 11pm and he called us and said, ‘There’s a commotion outside,’ but other than that, I wouldn’t have any dealings with any of them around here.
