Wright in time: Bohs’ latest rally breaks Derry’s hearts

A chill was not the only thing in the air, regret also reigned from a neutral corner because this season has so few games left as the Bohemians scored one of the most unlikely victories in memory against an incredulous and defeated Derry City.

James Akintunde put Derry ahead early on, giving them an advantage that they never seemed to give up, only for Keith Ward and Andre Wright to score in second-half injury time, and the Englishman scored in the 96th minute.

This was an absolutely incredible conclusion to the procedure and a desperate disgrace for Derry, but Bohs must be given credit for continuing to try and also his administration for the changes they made.

They remain in second place, as Derry struggles to return home in shock and despair.

Derry, who seems infuriatingly inconsistent, seemed certain to have beaten Bohs both times this season and was absolutely excellent here, until it all fell apart.

The Candystripes took the lead in absolute wonder in just four minutes. Bohs gave the ball rather carelessly around the edge of the box and, after a perfect pass from Walter Figueira, Akintunde dug the ball deliciously over James Talbot and inside the crossbar.

The impressive Figueira then crossed to Jake Dunwoody, who couldn’t reach the ball as Bohs staggered. Akintunde later found Adam Hamill, but made a mess with his effort as Derry continued to push.

Slowly, Bohs came into play and Peter Cherrie had to block Dawson Devoy’s free kick away in the 18th minute.

Devoy has established himself ahead of Ward and Danny Mandroiu, who was not part of Bohs’ team and it seems certain that he will leave this club before the start of next season. There will be no shortage of suitors.

Derry was then really sloppy on possession and Bohs recovered the ball through Conor Levingston, who fed Andre Wright to shoot directly at Cherrie.

Devoy is a potential star and the Meathman, after good footwork, finished off a shot in 28 minutes, Cherrie quite concerned.

Akintunde personified the first half: entertaining and relentless. He ran to Bohs’ defense on the halftime approach, but his left-handed curling iron drifted.

Derry were comfortably the better team in the first half and nothing changed at the start of the second. Figueira scored a double with Akintunde and Anto Breslin had to clear the ball close to his own line.

Figueira was absolutely outstanding and continued to cause Bohs’ defenders misery as the second half unfolded, Derry full of enthusiasm.

Bohs had a decent spell around 15 minutes into the second half and Danny Grant’s center simply eluded Wright, although there was no sign of panic or awkwardness at Derry 11.

Keith Long introduced Ross Tierney and Ward in an attempt at change, but neither was immediate after the introduction of either one, Bohs struggling to get energy from the intermittent audio of his fans cheering for the tannoy.

Derry looked even more threatening with 15 minutes to go. From a mocking Hammill corner, Breslin threw the ball off the line.

The excellent Conor McCormack was deemed to drive with five minutes to go, but Ward’s effort failed to upset Cherrie and Bohs would apparently get what they deserved: nothing.

Not quite. Initially, the animated Devoy was dragged by Dunwoody right into the box, Ward turning.

But that wasn’t enough: From Breslin’s free kick, Wright somehow peeked home after a goalie fight.

Live sport is so special because there is always the possibility of something ridiculous happening. What a shame so few witnessed.
