Workers will have the legal right to request to work from home according to the plans that the Government is developing.
ánaiste Leo Varadkar said that the Government is examining a series of ideas to promote teleworking.
One of the key elements of the plan is giving people the right to ask their employers to allow them to work from home.
“I know that when we were developing our strategy for telecommuting, we were thinking about how we can encourage ourselves to do this,” Varadkar said. “In a way, the question now is how do we encourage people to come back to the office when that is possible again,” he added.
He said a public consultation on remote working showed that people wanted a mix between working from home and the office.
“There will be some who will want to be in the office full time and some who will want to be at home full time, but the vast majority want a mixed job, so it can be some days at the office, some days at home and other days. working from a remote center, ”he said.
“We are working on the architecture we need to implement that. The kind of thing we are considering is giving people the legal right to apply for work from home or remote work. It does not mean that they obtain it, but the right to request it, ”he added.
Mr. Varadkar also said that the Government is also working on legislation on the right to disconnect.
“I don’t think anyone wants to make their home their full-time workplace, so that’s a problem too,” he said.
