Ireland have barely been at their best in this year’s Six Nations, but they certainly took heart for tonight’s clash with England.
While Eddie Jones’ team has also shown something of a mixed form in recent weeks, he looked excellent against France last time out and was expected to dominate the Irish this time around.
That was far from the case, with Ireland superior in all aspects of the contest. They dominated the breakdown, were much more powerful in the scrum and even seemed more inventive in attack. It was a plan of how they can play with Andy Farrell in the future.
As for England, there are now serious doubts about their future under their current head coach.
They may have won the Six Nations last year, but even then they were far from the best. In fact, you may have to go back to the 2019 World Cup before finding a quality English performance according to an expert viewer.
Speaking in ITVClive Woodward, a former World Cup winning coach, said England have not performed since their win over New Zealand in Japan, believing Eddie Jones should take responsibility for that.
I think from our personal point of view, this has been happening since the World Cup final. I still don’t think there has been a really proper report since England lost to South Africa.
Everyone was so excited about the New Zealand game (in the semi-final), a no show in the World Cup final has never been disarmed, what really happened, what happened?
I just have the feeling that Eddie and the team thought ‘we’re a younger team, we’re probably going to move on in four years and win it.’ That’s a big mistake.
International rugby is game, game, game. The moment you see that your game is not going well, I think you have to make changes.
Not for their coach, but I don’t think that team has passed its useful life because there are a lot of very good young players there like [Maro] Itoje and these guys.
I just don’t think we have updated the equipment. I don’t think England have played well since that semi-final match.
Eddie [Jones] is the coach, this is the moment you have to look in the mirror and that is the only person you are going to blame, you are in charge and the leader. You have to look in the mirror, not look out the window and blame other people, the press and the media.
You have to look in the mirror and say ‘we are where we are, let’s start over now’. We are still two years away from the World Cup.
Ireland was fantastic, don’t worry, but that didn’t reflect English rugby in terms of some of the talents we have.
Certainly not all is well in England’s countryside, with major changes appearing to be on the horizon.
