A WOMAN HAS been killed in what appears to be New Zealand’s first fatal shark attack in eight years, police said.
Emergency services responded yesterday afternoon to reports of a woman “injured in the water” at Waihi Beach, a popular tourist resort 153 kilometers southeast of Auckland, according to a police statement.
“There are indications that she had been injured by a shark,” said Police Inspector Dean Anderson.
She was pulled out of the water with injuries to her legs and attempts to resuscitate her on the beach failed, media reported.
A doctor on vacation joined paramedics, lifeguards and emergency services personnel to try to save the woman, Anderson said.
He added that the woman, whose identity has not been made public, was scheduled to undergo a post-mortem examination.
