A WOMAN was shot in the back of the neck when a gunman opened fire while she was watching television at home.
Sally Cummins, 61, is seriously ill in the hospital after being attacked while sitting in front of the box Monday.
A lone gunman is believed to have fired up to eight shots in quick succession at the terrace house on Bushmills Road in Coleraine at 11.30pm.
Bullets were fired into the upstairs and downstairs windows, as well as the front door.
The psychopath is believed to have escaped on foot, prompting a major police search of the area earlier yesterday.
‘SHOCKING’
PSNI Chief Superintendent Ian Magee said it was an “absolutely shocking incident.”
He added: “It is an attack that was carried out by criminal thugs, that is my sincere opinion, who are involved in drug trafficking, money laundering, intimidation and exploitation of vulnerable people within our communities.”
Local Congressman Gregory Campbell said: “There will be fear and shock among all age groups, but especially among those in the older community, and of course there will be anger that something like this could happen.”
He added that there will be “general revulsion” in the community for the incident.
Local Alliance Secretary Yvonne Boyle added: “My thoughts are with the victim and I hope she makes a full recovery.”
A PSNI spokesperson said: “Detectives in Coleraine are working to establish a motive for this attack and identify those responsible.
“Anyone who was in the area last night and who noticed something that could help the investigation, or anyone else with any other information, should contact the CID in Coleraine by calling 101, citing reference 2174 10/05/20” .
