Gardai has filed a witness appeal following an assault on the city’s main street in broad daylight.

Gardaí was alerted to an incident on Patrick Street, near the Savoy Cinema, around 3:45 p.m. on Thursday.

The man, in his early twenties, is believed to have sustained serious head injuries in an attack that took place at the AIB ATM near Penneys.

Three areas were cordoned off along Main Street, one along Robert Street between Penneys and the AIB ATM, the bus stop in front of Dunnes Stores, and another area cordoned off by the Savoy Cinema.

The victim was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment. His injuries are described as non-fatal.

A Garda spokesman said the scene was kept for technical examination.

“No arrests have been made, but the Gardaí is following a defined line of investigation. Investigations are ongoing. ”

Speaking today in response to the Sinn Fein TD violent incident for Cork North Central, Thomas Gould called on the Gardai to implement an immediate response plan and increase the number of Garda on city streets.

Mr. Gould said: “My thoughts are with anyone involved or affected by this serious incident today. The people of Cork are not used to violence of this magnitude. That this happened in broad daylight on the busiest street in the city will have shaken a lot of people.

“I have been asking the government to increase Garda funding for Cork City for far too long. It was only a matter of time before a serious incident like this occurred. We need a strong Garda presence on the streets of Cork City.

“Now there must be an immediate response to this incident. We need to see Gardai on the streets to ease people’s fears. People need to feel safe when arriving in Cork City. “
