Three children have been hospitalized and 13 injured after a school bus crashed into a railway bridge, ripping the roof off completely.
A total of 16 students, some as young as 11, were involved in the accident that occurred around 8:10 am today in Winchester.
A witness claimed the driver of the double-decker bus was on a new route when they saw the tunnel and “decided to pass anyway,” according to a report.
The roof of the vehicle, which was carrying students from Winchester’s Henry Beaufort School, was reportedly “completely cut off.”
A Hampshire police spokesman said: “We were called at 8.10am today, September 10, to report a serious collision on Well House Lane, Winchester, after a school bus collided with a rail bridge and caused major damage to the top of the bus.
“Three students with serious but not life-threatening injuries have been taken to the hospital.
“Another 13 students with minor injuries were treated at the scene.
“All students involved are between the ages of 11 and 16. There is a road closure on Well House Lane from the junction with Andover Road North to School Lane to allow us to deal with this incident.”
Police officers are working cooperatively with Hampshire County Council School and Children’s Services to support students and parnets.
Dog walker Eliza Bruml claimed the driver was on a new bus route and “ decided to pass anyway ” when they saw the tunnel, the Daily Echo reports.
She said: “The entire top of the bus has been ripped off, so there are no windows on the top.”
“A paramedic spoke to me and none of the children were seriously injured, I saw that some had some injuries and a couple was being treated on the side, nothing was serious.

“The bridge has not suffered serious damage, the trains still pass over it.
“The ambulance lady said that all the children said that the bus could not pass.
“It was a new bus route. The driver decided to pass anyway and all the children were prepared because they knew it was not going to happen.
A witness told Sky News: “The roof was ripped off by the tunnel and fell onto the side of the bus.”
Winchester Councilor Jane Rutter tweeted: “I just received a report that a double-decker bus has managed to lodge under the railroad bridge at Wellhouse Lane, Headbourne Worthy.
“Emergency services have been called. Avoid it if possible.”
Hants Roads police tweeted: “We are dealing with a serious collision on Well House Lane, Winchester, after a school bus collided with a railroad bridge.
“There are no life-threatening injuries. There is a road closure on Well House Lane from Andover Road North to School Lane. Thank you for your patience.”
The South Central Hampshire Ambulance Service responded to the accident in conjunction with the Hampshire Police, the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and Network Rail.
A spokesman for the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said five fire crews were dispatched today at 8.12am.
Well House Lane in Winchester is closed in both directions after the accident.
