Why Liverpool have to be ‘worried’ about Manchester United

Liverpool have to be “concerned” about Manchester United’s recent form after the Reds drew goalless against Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

The Reds have now won just two of their eight league games away from home this season, though it took a late punt from the goal line from Fabian Schar and the brilliance of Karl Darlow to keep them at bay at St James’ Park.

The draw against the Magpies was the second time Liverpool lost points in three days after West Brom scored a late draw at Anfield to secure a 1-1 draw on Sunday.

Liverpool would have trailed five points from second-placed Manchester United with the victory at Tyneside, but returned to Merseyside knowing that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men would be tied if they beat Aston Villa on New Year’s Day.

United are running a nine-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League, winning seven of those games, with the latest win coming in the form of a 1-0 win over Wolves on Tuesday.

Nicol said ESPN FC: “You look at the Liverpool result and the Man Utd result, the performance of a team that dominated the game, they should have won very, very comfortably, but still finish with a point and then you have a team at United on the rails they hardly deserved anything.

“There is no way they deserve to win this game [against Wolves] but they end up winning and getting three points. So that has to be a concern.

“At the end of the day Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp will look at themselves, try not to look away and just get the job done. But you have to worry about United because regardless of how they play now, they are getting wins.
