Noel Whelan has praised Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips for his pass to Patrick Bamford against Chelsea that led to his first goal in a 3-1 loss.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider Correspondent Connor Whitley, a former Leeds forward and a Whites fan since childhood, said Phillips’ pass from his weakest foot was “perfect.”

The 24-year-old received the ball on the left wing and played a perfectly weighted ball with his left foot that landed between Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Bamford passed the ball past the goalkeeper with his first touch before finishing quietly on an open goal.

And Whelan has stated that Phillips would receive more applause for his role in goal if he were Kevin De Brunye from Manchester City.

He said Football Insider: “We hit them on the counterattack, it was a beautiful shot from Bamford.

“That Kalvin Phillips ball on his weaker left side had to be perfect because Bamford was between two defenders. That ball had to be the right weight in the right area and it was a lovely and confident finish from Bamford.

“But saying that, they looked very dangerous going forward and we gave them too many mistakes and they should have one or two more through fumbles in the wrong place.

“If that pass were from De Bruyne, we would be talking about it for weeks.

“It wasn’t easy, he was lying down and he had to be in the right area with the right weight because Patrick is running away with the goalie coming out.”

Phillips now has two assists in the Premier League after also creating Leeds’ first goal in their 4-3 loss to Liverpool on opening day.

In 182 matches in all competitions for the Yorkshire giants, the England international has 12 goals and 12 assists.

In other Leeds United news, a prominent expert has gotten into a 2020 signing that is really struggling.
