What Today’s Level Five Announcement Means for Penneys, Smyths, and Other Retailers

January sales will be canceled, but retail will be allowed to continue as Ireland enters Level Five once again.

The Taoiseach announced this afternoon that Ireland’s third lockdown will begin on Christmas Eve ahead of a review on January 12.

But stores like Penneys, Smyths, Argos and all other retail stores will not have to close their doors again.

Non-essential retail will be under the same restrictions as in recent weeks with limits on the number of people in stores and social distancing measures.

The January sales events will have to be postponed, the Taoiseach noted in his public address.

The other big changes

As expected, pubs, restaurants, hairdressers, barbers and cinemas will close on December 24.

A new inter-county travel ban will go into effect on Midsummer’s night, to allow people to return to where they live after Christmas Day.

The number of homes that are allowed to visit will be reduced to another home from December 27, before being eliminated entirely from the New Year.

The number allowed to attend weddings will be reduced to just six people starting January 2.

Religious services will move online only after Christmas Day.
