Wexford marked his return to the inter-county season with a hard-fought three-point victory over Limerick at Mick Neville Park, thanks to a 1-13 to 1-10 win over Billy Lee’s team in windy Rathkeale.

Wexford led by eight points – 1-8 to 0-3 at the end of the first half in this Allianz Football League Division 4 clash when they had the strong breeze behind them, with Daithi Waters – making his 100th appearance with The Model County – grabbing the goal from his side.

Ben Brosnan was the best scorer for the visitors – the Castletown man and Wexford captain set the example and then produced a man of the match display, scoring seven points (five free) from their team’s 1-13 count.

Wexford had started better early on and led 0-6 to 0-1 after just 15 minutes with Brosnan scoring four free kicks and Tubritt catching two at play.

Waters’ goal came after the Wexford slalwart played a dangerous high ball over Donal O’Sullivan in Limerick’s goal, but the Monaleen goalkeeper pushed the ball off the crossbar and then over the line as the green flag went up. for target aperture.

With the wind now in their favor, Limerick seemed to have the momentum in the second half and looked confident to mount a comeback, scoring 1-3 within 10 minutes of the restart.

Billy Lee’s team goal came just three minutes after the break when halftime backups Sean McSweeney and Tommy Griffin connected well, having an immediate significant impact on the game.

McSweeney’s great effort toward goal found Griffin when he hit the back of the net to cut the deficit to five points.

Corbett, Treacy and Bourke took three in a row for Limerick to make it a two-point game before the water break of the second half.

But Limerick struggled to get back on track after that. Three points Wexford again put five between the sides.

Billy Lee’s team managed to beat Wexford 0-04 to 0-02 in the fourth quarter, but failed to achieve that all-important goal.

Limerick almost found the net on the last play, but Enright’s effort hit the post and he was deflected, following an excellent play from Bourke in form.

The result keeps both sides in the hunt for promotion and Limerick faces a trip to Sligo next weekend knowing that a win will end their four-year stint in Division 4.

Wexford, meanwhile, will have to overtake nearby neighbors Wicklow if they want a promotion.

Six teams can still finish in the top two promotion spots: Limerick, Wicklow and Wexford are all with eight points, while Antrim are at seven and Sligo and Carlow are at six points.
