Wet pubs will be closed for Christmas, restaurants get a green light if cases drop below 300 per day

Restaurants will reopen next week if daily Covid cases drop below 300.

But the chances of wet pubs getting some respite are out, and a source told the Irish Mirror this afternoon: “sadly, there is no hope for wet pubs.”

The hotel industry has been told that the magic number of Covid cases that will allow for a massive reopening of restaurants next week will be “in the 200s.”

Gastronomic bars will also receive the go-ahead, but some form of the controversial “€ 9 substantial meal” will still apply.

And the authorities will look for a better way to prove that a bar is really a restaurant.

This is aimed at a restaurant having to have a kitchen that works.

It is considered too dangerous at this stage for the ‘wet pubs’ to reopen, but the pub industry is exerting intense lobbying for a compromise.

Frenzied briefings were held this morning ahead of a meeting of the three government leaders this afternoon.

Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, Tánaiste, Leo Varadkar and the head of the Greens, Eamon Ryan, will meet tomorrow before a cabinet meeting where the ministers will give their opinion.
