West Brom’s boundless defender Dara O’Shea has been called up for the Republic of Ireland team ahead of this week’s UEFA Nations League matches against Bulgaria and Finland.

Coach Stephen Kenny is very familiar with O’Shea, having worked with him while he was managing the country’s Under-21 team.

O’Shea, 21, joins Brighton midfielder Jayson Molumby and Norwich City forward Adam Idah in getting a call from Kenny to step up to the senior level of the U21 team.

“Dara has been through the ranks, from under 15 to 15,” Kenny said.

“He was able to play in all four [defensive] Positions with West Brom last year, he’s actually a center midfielder, but he’s played as a right-back, left-back.

“With an additional injury or two, strains and whatnot, we’ve given ourselves that extra coverage with the arrival of Dara.

“His ability to play all four positions is an advantage.”

Kenny also revealed that Troy Parrott is a doubt for Thursday’s game against Bulgaria in Sofia after injuring himself during Millwall’s 3-0 friendly win over Southend.

“He traveled this morning and will have a scan in the afternoon to see the range,” Kenny said.

“He just stopped with a tight muscle. It’s a short space of time, so we’ll have to see what it’s like.”

James McCarthy, whose last internationalization was in October 2016, must also be evaluated by the team’s medical staff after injuring himself while playing in Crystal Palace’s friendly win over Oxford United on Tuesday.

“I know James is very interested in coming back and playing for Ireland, it has been a few years since he played,” Kenny said. “It will be a great addition to us.”
