Solskjaer’s side got off to a better start in the second half and were soon ahead after a well scored goal by striker Marcus Rashford.

In the final minutes of the match, Brighton began pressing for a draw. They finally found one in the 95th minute when Solly March lost his marker Bruno Fernandes and headed the ball to the back of the net.

However, the drama did not end when Harry Maguire headed the ball into Neal Maupay’s arm in the final minute of the game.

The referee went to VAR and decided it was a penalty, which Fernandes soon converted to give United their first victory.

Speaking after the game to BT Sport (via BBC), Solskjaer said: “We got away with it. Perhaps a point that we deserved, we did not deserve more. But the character deserved more.

“Last season we had too many draws so that’s a huge advantage for us.

“It is a difficult team to face. We don’t have the legs or the sharpness, but we’ll get there. We have a lot of work ahead of us. “

Solskjaer also joked that Brighton hit the wood five times during the match, saying: “You have to be happy that José Mourinho is not here to measure the goal posts.”

Despite losing the game, Brighton coach Graham Potter will be encouraged by his team’s performance. They were the best team in the first half and were unlucky enough to concede the penalty at the last minute.

Solskjaer will be happy that his team managed to get the win and get their first win of the new campaign.
