Waterford has come to the top of the table when it comes to divorce filings in Ireland, the latest figures from the Court Service revealed.
Deise County has overtaken Carlow and Dublin, which make up the rest of the top three based on population per capita.
Recently released details about the divorce and legal separation for 2018 show that there were 3,864 divorce applications before the circuit court that year.
Another 1,238 couples sought judicial separation, which may allow husbands or wives to separate more directly.
Regarding divorce filings, the rate per 100,000 inhabitants nationwide was just over 81.
Ten counties topped that number with the highest Waterford rate of all, with 102 divorces per 100,000 residents. Second on the list was Carlow at 97, followed by Dublin at 92, with the next highest Westmeath at 89.
At the far end of the scale, the lowest divorce rate was in Co Cavan, where there were 54 divorce filings for every 100,000 people. It was followed by Roscommon at 56 and Meath at 57. In terms of numbers, Dublin had by far the highest number of divorce filings, with a total of 1,233 couples seeking to separate.
Next up was Cork with 463, while at the other end of the table, Leitrim, the country’s least populous county, was only 25.
Women were considerably more likely than men to file for divorce. Figures show that 55.8% of requests, or 2,155 l, come from wives.
Last May, an overwhelming majority of Irish people voted to reduce the waiting period for divorce to just two years.
However, the impact of those changes will not be apparent until next year, at the earliest, when the figures for 2019 are released.
A spokesperson for the Courts Service said: “Like all of our courts, family law courts are not only busy, but also reflect what is happening throughout society, where the country and people are located.”
