Battleground was unable to emulate its star mother Found with a Breeders’ Cup win as it came too late in Friday’s Juvenile Turf, with Ballydoyle’s running back second behind Fire At Will.
A son of War Front, Battleground is bred to be smart when Found beat the mighty Golden Horn on the turf in 2015 before winning the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe the following year.
His first colt, Battleground, had shown a lot of talent winning the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot, but had been out since his soft victory at the Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
Taken out of the rhythm by Ryan Moore, the Aidan O’Brien-trained assailant set off down the straight but failed to capture the winner., which represented coach Mike Maker and jockey Ricardo Santana, obtaining a second emotional success in one of the most important meetings of Flat Racing.
“Thank you Mike and the owner who gave me a great opportunity and thank God,” said the rider, whose previous Breeders’ Cup score came with Mitole in the Sprint last year.
His father, Ricardo snr, was paralyzed from the waist down after a riding accident in 2007 and Santana added: “I can’t believe it and I am truly blessed to be a part of this. Everything I do is for my family, which is in my heart right now.”
Maker had little doubt about the use of the Panamanian, which has assembled more than 1,000 winners in the United States since agent Rubén Muñoz brought it to the United States in 2009.
The coach said: “We’ve had a lucky streak for the last four or five months and Ricardo was available and he was doing a great job for us. We felt he deserved a chance.”
“To be honest, I thought the price of the horse was too expensive. He did nothing wrong and was very professional.”

O’Brien and Moore had teamed up four times to win the Juvenile Turf before, but the Battleground setback did not dent Paddy Power’s belief in the horse, who is the 10-1 favorite with the signing for the 2,000 Guineas of the next year and can be backed at 25-1 for the Derby.
He lost little in defeat and was the best of the European visitors, finishing against Jesscia Harrington-trained Cadillac and Michael Bell’s running back The Lir Jet, while Ralph Beckett’s New Mandate and Devilwala pair had little impact.
“My horse ran super,” Moore said. “Very happy with him.”
Harrington, whose name was made in jump racing but is now a potent force at Flat, was also satisfied.
“Cadillac ran a great race,” he said. “Shane [Foley] He said he got into a bun fight early on, which pushed him back to eighth place and ruined the race for him. But I am very satisfied with his career and especially with the way he stayed on the line. ”
