We are not so sure about this one.
It wasn’t a great start to the season for John Egan last week, with Sheffield United falling 2-0 at home to the Wolves.
The Irishman would have expected to bounce back with a solid performance at Aston Villa tonight, but received his marching orders after just 11 minutes.
Egan got into a chase with Ollie Watkins after a long pass over the top, struggling with the forward to reach the loose ball. The referee called the defender a foul, but he was going to surprise everyone with a direct red card.
Egan was deemed to have committed a professional foul to prevent Watkins from having a chance to score, a decision that seemed very tough to us.

Was it an expulsion? 🟥

This is a similar incident to the one that saw Andreas Christensen fired during Chelsea’s loss to Liverpool yesterday, although it’s certainly less clear-cut than that.
We often see matchups similar to this that don’t even result in fouls, and the referees consider that the players are competing for the ball. On this occasion, the Irish defender came out on the wrong side of the decision.
Egan certainly protested his innocence, remaining in the field until the VAR verification was completed. Now he’s also set to serve a suspension for the club’s next Premier League game.
