How tall is a Cork City Bus Éireann double-decker bus?
Well, just over 3.4 meters at its apex.
That’s a figure that a Cork City Éireann bus driver will not quickly forget after driving bus n. 220 under a bridge in Douglas with a maximum height of 3.4 meters and in the process causing the bus to get stuck under the bridge.
The two-story flat serving Carrigaline and Crosshaven duly jammed under the bridge, blocking all traffic on the busy Douglas Highway.
The incident occurred on the night of Friday, October 9, after the driver took the bus down Church Road, which connects east and west Douglas through St. Columba’s Church and St. Luke’s Elementary School.
Gardaí attended the scene last night around 11:15 pm and said no injuries were reported.
The bus normally goes over the Douglas Bridge, en route to the city center, and not under it.
The 220 crosses the city from Ovens near the EMC factory, into the city center, towards Douglas and towards Carrigaline and Crosshaven.
A Bus Éireann spokesperson confirmed to CorkBeo that there were no injuries, adding that “the passengers were accommodated in another vehicle to complete their trips.”
“The vehicle was taken off the road in 90 minutes with superficial damage.”
Wags was quick to use social media to offer theories about how the bus got stuck under the bridge.
One blamed overindulgence at KC’s, the famous takeout just down the road from the bridge in Douglas.
When CorkBeo visited the bridge on Saturday morning, the bus had been cleared, the road was open, and there was no visible damage to the bridge.
Capwell, the Bus Éireann workshop in Cork City, has long been a source of colorful nicknames for the drivers and mechanics who work there.
“3.4” could be the latest addition.
