A video taken by a fearful charity worker in Cork City on Saturday night has gone viral, capturing the moment Gardai chased a man in a crowded Grand Parade despite Level 5 restrictions in course.
The video, taken by Ali Hamou, shows hundreds of people gathered in the street, some running and screaming as several Gardai chase an individual.
“This is lockdown, Level 5. The Gardai are chasing teenagers making so much noise and trouble, it’s crazy,” Ali is heard saying.
“It’s totally out of control and out of control, it’s crazy. I’ve never seen this, not even in the movies. What’s going on here is not right, these kids don’t care, they’re here. Look at the number of the people around.
“We are doing charity work here and we fear for our lives, we are literally not sure how you can see.”
A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí observed and intervened with a group of young men suspected of being involved in the sale and supply of illegal drugs.
“A man fled Gardaí, who after a short chase intercepted and arrested this man. This engagement has been captured and widely circulated on social media.
“A suspicious amount of cocaine was recovered. One Garda received minor injuries to the face during the incident.”
It was further stated that “during this incident, and as a result of a small number of other minor, mainly related public order incidents, nine men were arrested by the Gardaí.”
