Victoria Beckham’s clothing brand is being sued by a former employee who allegedly suffered a hand injury.

Pattern cutter Kristina Kubiliene worked for Victoria Beckham Limited in her studio in Hammersmith, west London, for almost eight years, but left after developing carpal tunnel syndrome, her lawyer said.

He allegedly worked up to 15 hours a day for seven days a week in the run-up to New York Fashion Week, handling heavy fabrics and equipment.

Eventually, she needed surgery and was left barely able to open her purse, it was claimed.

On Tuesday, Natasha Moyeed of Slater and Gordon said: “Kristina worked for Victoria Beckham Limited from November 2011 to August 2019 and she loved her job working at the London studio in Hammersmith.

“She was a pattern cutter and very good at this job, but because she was good, she was tasked with working for long periods and with heavy fabrics.

“It was these repetitive, uncomfortable and sustained movements that caused carpal tunnel syndrome to progress rapidly in his hands and wrists.

“The last time I saw her, she could barely open her purse.

“She is unable to work and has had to undergo surgery to have some movement in her hands.”

He is still unable to work and has such a weak grip that he needs help at home to perform basic tasks. It is not known when, if ever, you will be able to return to a similar role, or any type of employment

Moyeed said his client’s job was to lift fabric rolls, which weighed between 44 lb (20 kg) and 77 lb (35 kg), then place and secure the fabric to the patterns.

Once immobilized, it would shrink the fabric with a heavy industrial iron, Ms. Moyeed said.

The entire procedure would take between 30 and 60 minutes.

Ms. Kubiliene cut the fabric, which required significant pressure and precision, holding it with the left hand and cutting with the right, which took up to three hours.

His lawyer said: “He normally worked from 10 a.m. at 6 p.m., but twice a year for two weeks she attended New York Fashion Week.

“Over a month earlier, his workload increased to up to 15 hours a day, seven days a week, with no breaks or regular breaks.

“During these times his hands and wrists were so sore that he needed pain relievers to work.

“Victoria Beckham Limited was unable to implement measures to care for Kristina and prevent this from happening.”

Last year, Ms. Kubiliene had an operation to alleviate her carpal tunnel syndrome.

But he was unable to work after surgery and left his role.

Ms. Moyeed said, “He still can’t work and has such a weak grip that he needs help around the house to do basic tasks.

“It is not known when, if ever, he will be able to return to a similar role, or any type of employment.

“Kristina does not wish to comment further at this time.”
