A 54 cm Chinese celedon vase has sold for a whopping 1.2 million euros, about 1,000 times more than was expected at an auction today.
Auctioneer Philip Sheppard said the price was a new Irish record for an art object sold at public auction.
Lot 662 ‘Chinese Celedon Vase’ was part of an auction held yesterday and today.
The tender began at what the auction house described as “a modest € 500”. The vase had an estimated price of € 800 to € 1,200 included in the catalog.
The tender lasted a few minutes with two bidders in dispute until the final offer of 1.2 million euros.
The vase was purchased by a collector based in Taiwan.
According to Sheppard’s, the seller, who wishes to remain anonymous, was “speechless” upon learning of the auction price.
Philip Sheppard said: “We are delighted to have created a new Irish record.
“Doing it with a live online sale at this level of value and in such a resoundingly successful manner is a tribute to the professionalism of the Sheppard’s team, who mostly work from home.”
