Vandals have targeted the leaders of the United States House and Senate after Congress failed to increase the amount of money given to Americans to help them overcome the coronavirus pandemic.
The home of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in Kentucky and the home of Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi in California were vandalized over the weekend.
Mr. McConnell’s home was attacked around 5 am Saturday and spray paint was left on the door that read: WERES (sic) MY MONEY.
Mitch McConnell called the vandalism a ‘radical tantrum’
Scribbled on a window was MITCH KILLS THE POOR and there was profanity painted under the mailbox.
He then described the vandalism as a “radical tantrum,” adding: “I have spent my career fighting for the First Amendment and advocating for peaceful protest.
“I appreciate all Kentuckians who have been involved in the democratic process, whether they agree with me or not. This is different. Vandalism and the politics of fear have no place in our society.”
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, also suffered vandalism in her home
In San Francisco, the home of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, was also vandalized, with graffiti, a pig’s head and fake blood.
Police said the vandalism was reported around 2 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
According to KGO-TV, the graffiti on Ms. Pelosi’s home included the phrases “$ 2K”, “Cancel the rent!” and “We want everything.”
On New Year’s Day, Senate Republicans refused to allow a debate on a bill to increase the amount of financial aid from $ 600 (£ 438) to $ 2,000 (£ 1,463) for each person who earned up to $ 75,000. (£ 54,000).
The increase was supported by President Donald Trump and passed by the Democratic-led House, but was blocked by McConnell in the Senate.
