A Trump supporter who broke into the Capitol building in Washington described the moment when security forces shot and killed a woman.

Video of the incident shows the man standing next to the victim as the fatal shot is fired. He is then seen trying to help her as she falls to the ground.

Interviewed later by a local WUSA 9 news reporter, his hands can be seen stained with his blood.

“We had broken into the chambers inside and there was a young woman who ran to the windows,” he said.

“Several policemen and secret services were saying ‘back up, get down, get away.’ She ignored the call and when we ran to grab people and push them back, they shot her in the neck and she fell on me again.

“And she started saying ‘okay, okay’ and then she started moving a little weird and blood was coming out of her mouth, neck and nose and I don’t know if she’s dead or alive anymore.”

He added: “I’m not injured … it could have been me, but she went in first.”

The invasion of the Capitol building was intended to disrupt the formal confirmation of Electoral College votes in favor of President-elect Joe Biden. The session of Congress was suspended, but then resumed after the building was cleared and order restored.

As the session reopened, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said: “I understand a woman was shot and tragically lost her life.

“We mourn her and feel sorry for her friends and family.

“These images were projected to the world. Foreign embassies wired their home capitals to report harrowing scenes at the very heart of our democracy.

“This will be a stain on our democracy that will not be erased so easily.”
