Up to 70 cases of Covid-19 in Cavan linked to relatives who attended a wedding on the other side of the border

An increase of up to 70 Covid-19 cases in Co. Cavan has been linked to the family who attended a wedding across the border, the Sunday World can reveal.

It is understood that the family contracted the virus when they crossed the border to attend the nuptials in Co. Fermanagh.

They then unknowingly infected a larger group of people upon their return, much to the dismay of local public health officials.

There is no indication that the family has violated the Covid-19 regulations that were in effect at the time.

A source said: “They also had another family function in the Republic and they gave it to the people.

“They didn’t deliberately come out and they did, they didn’t realize they had it.”

Numbers in Co. Cavan were among the highest in Europe when it hit a 14-day peak of more than 1,000 per 100,000 of the population in recent days.

Local doctors have been locked in in recent weeks dealing with the outbreak.

GPs blamed a large number of cases for the GAA post-game celebrations as various inter-club championships were brought forward.

A doctor told the Sunday World: “The border is another key factor with people moving from one place to another. Cavan people used to traditionally congregate at weddings, funerals and football games. They cross and return north to work. , go to school and shop.

“There is real community engagement here, but unfortunately this type of socialization is deadly dangerous when it comes to a pandemic.”

The doctors and the HSE were amazed that the virus in Cavan had grown so fast, so fast.

One in 67 people in the region has tested positive for the virus.

The Ballyjamesduff electoral area in Cavan currently has the highest 14-day incidence rate in Ireland 1,488.33 per 100,000.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly also claimed that the GAA in Cavan was partly to blame for the shocking Covid numbers.

Crosser Lough won the senior championship for the first time in 40 years, while Ballinagh won the intermediate title after a stint in the wild.

Infected

Just last week it came to light that a man in Limerick who had returned from abroad had infected 58 people in that county.

There were also reports in North Louth of some local super spreaders.

The issue of identifying and stopping super spreaders is a huge problem for HSE contact and track teams.

Cavan GP Dr. Dara Hume warned: “Everyone should know how to act as if everyone they see and know has Covid and stay away from them.

“You just have to think that someone you love is vulnerable or at risk, like your grandmother or your neighbor, and this is what you have to do to save them.

“I can’t comment on any individual cases, but the border is definitely part of the reason Cavan’s numbers are so high.”

Both the HSE and the Department of Health declined to comment.
