The father of a seven-month-old baby was unaware that his son lay dead in his Co Dublin home and that his partner had left the property and tragically died until Gardaí called the home early Thursday to raise the alarm.
Gardaí was treating the baby’s death as “inexplicable” and was awaiting the results of the autopsy to determine whether foul play was a factor. The death of the child’s mother was being treated as a “tragedy” by investigators.
Garda sources said that even if the autopsy determined the boy had been illegally murdered, they were not looking for anyone else in connection with his death.
The Irish Times understands that the family is originally from the west of Ireland, but that they had been living in Lucan for some time and that the boy’s father works in the education sector.
The first indication that something adverse had happened was around 3.45am on Thursday when the Gardaí were alerted to a woman acting suspiciously on the M50 near the toll plaza after getting out of her car.
When they went to investigate, they found the woman’s body in Lower Road, Strawberry Beds, Lucan, Co Dublin. After verifying his car’s registration, Gardaí established that it was registered at an address in the Lucan area.
Declared dead
When Gardaí called the property, the woman’s partner was asleep and didn’t know anything had happened. However, when the baby was searched at the home, he was found unconscious and pronounced dead at the scene.
There were no obvious signs of injury or violence to the baby. His remains were taken to Crumlin Hospital and his mother’s remains were taken to the City Morgue for an autopsy.
“At this stage, the investigative Gardaí are treating these incidents as a family tragedy and are currently not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths,” the Garda said in a statement. He added that the family of the deceased woman and child had requested privacy “at this sad moment.”
While Lucan Gardaí was conducting an investigation, they do not believe that anyone else was involved in the deaths.
