Two people were rescued yesterday from the highest mountains in Ireland in separate calls.
The first alarm went off around 3.50pm when the Kerry Mountain rescue team was tasked with evacuating a hiker with a lower leg injury near the base of the zigzags in Cnoc na Toinne, south of Carrauntoohill, on the MacGillycuddy Reeks.
Several members of the team helped the victim to Árd na Locha, where she was evacuated by jeep to Lisleibane.
Just over two hours later, the team was reassigned to an incident atop Carrauntoohill after a man in his 60s fell ill.
The Coast Guard Rescue 115 helicopter was at the scene, but bad weather conditions prevented it from assisting in the evacuation.
Members of the mountain rescue climbed to the top, treated the victim at the scene before taking him to Árd na Locha via the Devil’s Staircase.
The victim was then taken by jeep to a waiting ambulance at Kissane’s Cross.
Sixteen members of the team participated in the rescue operation that concluded after midnight.
