Two people die in separate crashes in Co Cork

Two people were killed in separate crashes on the roads of Co Cork on Wednesday.

A woman in her 60s was killed and a man seriously injured after a car-truck collision on the main Bandon-Bantry road in West Cork.

The woman, who was 60, was fatally injured when the car collided with a truck near the Baxter Bridge on the outskirts of Bandon at 12:45 p.m.

Emergency services were alerted and the woman was pronounced dead at the Carhoon scene and her body was taken to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The driver of the car, also in his 60s, suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.

The truck driver was not seriously injured, but was treated on the spot for shock. Both vehicles remain at the scene to allow a forensic investigation of the Garda accident.

The R585 has been closed and detours have been established about 7 km from Bandon.

Gardaí has ​​not released the name of the dead woman, but she lived in West Cork. She was not from the area and Gardaí is trying to make contact with relatives living abroad.

Meanwhile, a motorcyclist in his 30s died after a collision with a pickup truck on Dromahane to Glantane Road near Mallow in North Cork around 3.45pm.

The motorcyclist, who is from the local north Cork area, was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to Cork University Hospital for an autopsy.

It is understood that the driver of the van was not seriously injured.

The road was closed and detours were set up to allow a forensic accident investigator to examine the scene.
