The men, ages 37 and 45, also face one charge of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, the PSNI confirmed.

Lawlor, 35, was shot in the head in the front lawn of a house in the Etna Drive area of Ardoyne, North Belfast, around 11.50am on April 4.

Lawlor had been in hiding since the murder of Mulready Woods in January.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Detectives investigating the murder of Robert Lawlor in North Belfast in April have charged two men aged 37 and 45 with murder and possession of a firearm with the intent to endanger the lifetime.

BRUTAL MURDER

“They are due to appear at the Belfast MC later this morning.”

Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy said of the murder in April: “This was a brutal murder and I think the man was shot multiple times at point-blank range.

“I am in awe of the recklessness of the murderer or murderers. Not only did they carry out this cruel murder leaving a family experiencing their worst nightmare, they did not care that the children and other members of this North Belfast community were in danger.

“Murder is a heinous crime and killing someone during this global coronavirus pandemic is disgusting when people are trying to adapt to a new way of life and trying to cope with the pressures that come with it.

“Those involved in this murder selfishly did not think about the impact on front line emergency services who are already working hard to keep people safe with an already limited resource.

“I have now launched a murder investigation and, although it is too early to speculate on the motive for the murder, I can confirm that I am pursuing a number of lines of investigation regarding the investigation.

Separately, three associates of the gang behind Mulready-Woods’ murder are in garda custody being questioned by detectives.
