Two men have been arrested after Gardai seized more than € 20,000 worth of suspicious drugs and cash yesterday in Cork City.

Just after 11pm last night, Gardaí from the Downtown Police Unit was patrolling Glasheen Road and saw a man they believed was involved in a drug deal.

While attempting to question the man, he ran from the scene and was stopped by Gardai after a short chase on foot.

When they searched him, he was found to be in possession of approximately € 2,000 in cash.

The man in his 20s was arrested and taken to Bridewell Garda Station, where he was detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

A search warrant was then executed at a nearby house with the help of the Southern Region Canine Unit.

During the course of the search, Garda Dog “Rex” discovered € 8,400 worth of alleged cocaine that was hidden in the garden.

Gardaí, from the City Center Surveillance Unit, continued to search the house where they discovered 9,700 euros of suspected cannabis herb.

All suspected drugs will now be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis.

A second man, also in his 20s, was arrested at the home and taken to Bridewell Garda Station, where he was detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Both men have since been released and a file will be prepared for the Director of the Public Ministry.

This is the second drug bust carried out by Rex during the weekend announcement in which he discovered € 16,000 of suspected cocaine and € 800 of suspected cannabis herb in Mallow on Saturday.
