Several staff members and two inmates tested positive for COVID-19 in a Dublin prison, it has been confirmed.
A massive testing program will take place at Arbor Hill Prison in the center of the city after positive cases of coronavirus are confirmed.
An outbreak control team has been deployed to the prison and the Irish Prison Service says they are working with the HSE to control the outbreak.
They have also confirmed tonight that some scheduled phone calls and video calls may be affected by the outbreak.
An IPS statement read: “The Irish Prison Service can confirm that a small number of Arbor Hill prison staff have tested positive for COVID-19 and contact tracing continues in this regard.
“The Irish Prison Service can further confirm that 2 prisoners also tested positive for the virus.
“As a precautionary measure, the Irish Prison Service agrees with the HSE Department of Public Health that all staff and prisoners will be screened to provide a safe response to the current situation at Arbor Hill Prison.
“The Arbor Hill Outbreak Control Team (OCT) continues to collaborate with the Prison Administration to monitor appropriate actions to mitigate the possible spread of the disease within the prison.
“The Irish Prison Service is working closely with HSE Public Health regarding the management of the current outbreak, including arrangements for mass testing of all staff and inmates at Arbor Hill Prison.
“To help prevent further spread of the infection, a more restricted regime has been introduced that may affect access to video calls and short-term phone calls for prisoners in pre-trial isolation; however, we are working to ensure that we can continue to facilitate family contact. as far as possible. “
