Two Gardaí youths required medical treatment over the weekend following separate violent incidents in Co Louth.

On Saturday, a Garda, in his 20s, was hit by a car on the M1 motorway. At 1.45pm, the garda and his colleagues from the Dundalk Highway Police Unit stopped a car along the northbound carriageway near Exit 20 while conducting speed checks.

The car stopped and Garda got out of his patrol vehicle to speak to the driver. The driver then suddenly accelerated, hitting the Garda and throwing it aside before fleeing the scene.

The garda was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where he was treated for a broken clavicle and evaluated for concussion. He was released shortly after midnight Sunday and is convalescing at home.

“He took a good hit. It could very easily have been fatal, ”commented a local garda.

Garda Representatives Association Secretary General Pat Ennis said the incident could have had far more serious consequences.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash and escape has not yet been located.

The Gardaí in Dundalk is calling for witnesses to the incident to come forward, along with road users with dash cam footage who were on the M1 route at the time of the crash and escape on Saturday afternoon.

Anyone with information should contact the Dundalk Garda station (042) 938 8400, or the confidential Garda line at 1800 666111.

In a second incident, a Garda, also in his 20s, was hospitalized after allegedly being attacked during a drug search in Dundalk. Since then, a man has been charged with assault.

The alleged assault occurred when two Gardaí questioned a man after seizing a small amount of drugs from a home in the Glenwood area around 9 p.m. Saturday.

Concussion

The garda suffered injuries to his face and hands and may have suffered a concussion. He was transferred to the Hospital Nuestra Señora de Lourdes and later discharged.

A second guardian was also allegedly attacked during the incident, but did not require medical attention.

A man was arrested at the scene and taken to Dundalk Garda Station, where he was detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Since then, the suspect has been charged in connection with the incident and is due to appear before the next session of a district court on Monday morning.

Louth GRA representative Derek O’Donoghue said the incident “demonstrates the dangers of the job. People don’t realize that you get to work on time, you finish on time, but no one knows what will happen in between “

It is understood that Dundalk was busy on Friday and Saturday with a large number of people who came from Northern Ireland to socialize in the newly opened restaurants and gourmet pubs. However, no other major incidents were reported.
