Two clumsy criminals were caught after a high-speed chase after shooting at a house, unaware that the Gardai were around the corner.
The hapless couple were arrested and taken to hospital after the nightly chase, which ended when their car overturned.
The incident began around 3:10 am in Finglas, in North Dublin, after the couple traveled to a house on Heathfield Drive.
After trying and failing to enter, they fired several shots through the patio door.
Garda detectives were patrolling the area at the time around the corner and came to investigate.
They saw a car fleeing the scene with its lights off and the vehicle was chased down River Road towards the M50.
WEAPON RECOVERED
A short time later, the Suzuki car turned onto the N4, where it attempted to ram a Garda vehicle, but instead flipped onto the roof.
The two men inside, one in his 30s and the other in his 20s, were arrested and taken to hospital, where one was treated for possible spinal injuries.
A Garda was also slightly injured at the scene, but did not require hospitalization. A pistol was found inside the Suzuki.
The suspects are two low-level criminals from Ballymun.
Gardai is still unsure who may have been the target of the attack, as there was no one inside the house at the time.
Sources said they are investigating whether the duo could have gone to the wrong property.
THE OMBUDSMAN INVESTIGATES
In accordance with procedure, the Garda Ombudsman was informed of the incident and opened an investigation at 4:45 a.m. M.
Gardai said in a statement: “Gardaí from Blanchardstown with the assistance of the Armed Support Unit attended the scene and discovered damage to the house from gunfire.
“It was established that no person was present on the premises during the time of the incident.
“A car was observed leaving the scene at high speed.
“This vehicle was located a short time later by Gardaí and a contained pursuit operation was launched.
“This operation concluded on the N4, Palmerstown.
“As a result of this operation, the vehicle in question collided with an official Garda vehicle.”
