Twitter users were furious after a short snippet of It Galz’s podcast “poking fun” at Movember went viral on social media.

Dubliners Jenny Claffey and Lindsay Hamilton were discussing the term “the ick,” which refers to the qualities that put you off dating.

In the short audio clip posted online, you can hear Lindsay list “a man involved in Movember” as number one on her list.

She adds, “And I don’t mean just a nice guy doing it.

“But, you know, the constant participation by donations, the constant updates on the mustache.”

At that moment Jenny intervenes with a “Taking care of mental health is so disgusting”.

Sharing the snippet online, a Twitter user said: “This was sent to me today. Spitting on guys for ‘taking care of their sanity’ during #Movember. What a horrible, horrible thing to say #ItGalz.”

Several people criticized the clip, referring to it as “vile” and “toxic” and a “mockery” of the men’s mental health fundraising event.

One person said: “My brother passed away 6 weeks ago while raising funds for Movember and has since raised € 115,000 for charity. But delighted these girls said their two cents. Vile.”

Another person said: “Terrible. Making fun of Movember (which is a fantastic cause) and potentially dissuading men from participating or even talking about their mental health. Toxic illness.”

A third person asked Spotify if there was “a way to report disgusting content like this.”

A fourth person added: “An insensitive way of approaching the subject regardless of your intention. You should be more careful when talking about serious topics.

The rest of the conversation in the full podcast continues as follows:

Jenny says, “It’s the obsession with the lock of hair on her upper lip. It’s like ‘OMG.’

Lindsay adds, “And again, it’s one of those things where, I understand, it’s for the greater good and that’s great and all, but I can’t help but feel grossed out.”

Jenny goes on to say, “It’s like the male equivalent of women using the body positivity movement to take a selfie. You’re just posting the damn mustache more than the Go Fund Me thing.”

Lindsay says, “If Go Fund Me is in your bio, I just-” before Jenny cuts her off and adds, “I don’t care about that.”

At that point, Lindsay says, “No, that’s all-encompassing for me.”

Jenny adds, “I don’t care if they lean more to the charity side, I don’t like it when they lean more to the selfie side.”

Lindsay concludes, “I can’t really cope with sharing the bond and begging. I can’t describe it, but it disgusts me.”

However, the duo have defended the clip saying “it was not an attack on mental health issues.”

They told Extra.ie: “Lindsay and I have been open over the years to share our own struggles with depression and anxiety.

“We are a dating / comedy podcast and we did an episode about the irrational things that can turn people away from potential partners, and Jenny is not very fond of facial hair.”

They added that on Thursday night they did a live broadcast in aid of the Dublin Rape Crisis Center that raised almost € 5,000.
