Trump fires Secretary of Defense and continues to dispute US election result

US President Donald Trump fired his defense secretary Mark Esper on Monday and continued to dispute the outcome of last week’s election, while President-elect Joe Biden got to work on a new strategy for the coronavirus.

Trump, who will remain as president until January 20, announced through his Twitter account that Mr. Esper had been “fired.”

It had been widely reported that the Pentagon chief had already written a resignation letter in recent months. He publicly disagreed with Trump’s threat to deploy active duty troops to quell public protests during the demonstrations over the police murder of George Floyd this summer, and tensions had been high between the two men.

Christopher Miller, a Department of Defense official, will assume one of the top positions in the US Cabinet as an interim.
