Trick-or-treating ‘not a good idea’ this year

Higher Education Minister Simon Harris calls on parents and children to skip the trick or treating this Halloween to prevent further spread of Covid-19.

814 new cases were detected in the Republic of Ireland last night, and the Department of Health announced two more deaths.

Three counties now have a 14-day incidence rate of more than 300, while in the hospital, 198 were being treated for the disease last night.

Regarding Halloween, let me tell you this, it will be different this year.

Harris said Halloween will be different this year and that trick or treating is “not a good idea.”

“I have received a lot of contact from many children asking about Halloween, and in the past, when we were open and honest with our children, they responded with such resistance,” Harris said.

“It has been very difficult for them, they have had communions canceled, confirmations canceled, schools closed, exams canceled, graduations moving online and all kinds of different things.”

She added: “In relation to Halloween, let me say this, it’s going to be different this year. It’s not a good idea to start walking around everyone’s house, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a good time.

“It doesn’t mean that you can’t dress up in a scary costume, it doesn’t mean that your mom or dad can’t get treats around the house or watch a creepy movie or play some games.”
